Problem running live cd of Knoppix 3.7

I have two cd's containing a live copy of Knoppix 3.7. When I run the cd, I am told to go into my machine's BIOS and change the order of what runs first so that the machine will run off of the CD rather than my hard drive which contains Windows XP Pro. Problem is that I cannot access the BIOS and if I could, how would I change the order of what runs first? And AMEN, I know that this is a NEWBIE question! Whoever responds, please copy your response to my e-mail address, latersplace@bellsouth.net....

Thanks,

FLASH

i wouldnt openly post your email, buddy. if the moderators of the site could please just see to it that he gets a message that says i responded to him, that is fine.

most bioses are different. so it can be difficult to tell you exactally what to do, but usually you will push delete at the very first of the system startup. before all the windows jive and all that, just imediately after you get the power light on. some systems use the F2 key and some F10, there are probably an infinate number of possiblities. but it will usualy say on the screen, like HP pavilion, or compaq or averatec, or gateway, whatever then it will sometimes tell you the button to push, and this is when you should push it. if you dont get it and it goes back to trying to boot windows, then reboot, and try again. figure out which button it is. i have even got one here that wants alt. so... then you will enter the bios..

look for a tab that says something like boot, or advanced, or drives, and find boot order. it will usually contain hard disk, cdrom, floppy, and maybe lan, and usb. just put the cdrom first then hard disk. then save it on the exit tab of the bios and exit it. then the computer will reboot, and if you have the disk in the drive it will boot knoppix.

Thanks for assistance with Knoppix 3.7

Many thanks for your help; I finally figured out that your instructions were valid, but that my implementation was the error. So, I HELD down the f2 button when I started up the machine and of course the right menu came up. I followed your instructions then and got Knoppix running! I played with it for a while and it was good. Was able to do everything, but send and receive e-mail of course. Don't at this moment understand how to do that, but am having fun with that operating system.

I'm doing all of this under a certain amount of tension as hurricane DENNIS is knocking at my front door. I live on the bluff of Mobile Bay right across from Mobile and it appears that we might be in DENNIS's target as he wanders ashore a bit later. Went through IVAN okay, but it was harrowing. Not many residents left here now, but we have everything battened down and are ourselves getting ready for the Big Blow! We have three dogs and they are sensing that something is amiss and will not leave our side. I hope that the power isn't off too long so that I may return to working with Knoppix. If you can advise how to get my e-mail messaging up and running with that OS, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks again,

the problem with sending and recieving email, hm... you probably cant recieve a verry big email, but should be able to get small text files, cause you cant write to the disk. windows ntfs partitions are tricky and i wouldnt suggest trying to write to them with linux, even with kernel params or captive ntfs. did you check and verify the servers are in right? other than that i dont know.

Unable to send/receive e-mail using Knoppix live CD

Thanks for your help; hurricane DENNIS just departed my area, so I'm not really back up to best power at the moment, so may sound somewhat 'lessened.' However, I am running a Dell wih 512 MB RAM at 930Mh. I can access Knoppix on the live CD all right, but can't find the e-mail client with which to send or receive an e-mail.....I will attempt that again in a few minutes.................................

Thanks,:)
