problem printing to Windows network printer

The HP Laserjet 1018 printer is connected to a networked XP machine that is accessible from the Ubuntu 10.04 machine. I can open shared files on the XP machine from Ubuntu so assume that communication is correct.
I have set up the printer as instructed in this help file...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsXPPrinter
SAMBA sees the printer on the network , verifies the printer and the driver(from Ubuntu files) loads.
Everything goes along just fine until "print test page" or I try printing a text doc.
The printer is assigned the job# but there is no action.
The printer shows up in the "Printing -local host" window.
Under "printer properties" the "Make and Model"are showing the correct device in the correct location.
The "Printer State" shows "idle - /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
I have purged, uninstalled and re-installed CUPS.
No change.
Any ideas would be welcome.

Yes download the hp pdp driver for your printer and it'll work fine, mine same thing happened for HPLJP2055d and it's cool.

The HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing) driver comes prepackaged with Ubuntu 9.10+ and is an official open source driver by HP, supporting all printers.

To enable the printer on a network, go to "System -> Admin -> Printing" and then click the "New" button. The program will take some time searching for printers (you'll see the GNOME icon that you also get when Nautilus is searching for files on the bottom left), so be patient. When that icon goes away, click the "Network Printer" expander. Your printer should be there.

Just to confirm, you are suggesting that I download and install the driver for an HP 1008 printer instead of the 1018 printer driver?
Tried the 1008 driver and problem remains

Have you installed HPLIP? In my case, it worked flawlessly for an HP printer that is directly on the network with its own IP address.

When I was first trying to connect to a remote printer connected to an XP box using cups and Samba, I found I had to do this to make it easy:

1. Make sure that Samba was installed and started automatically.

2. Make sure the printer is shared in Windows. (Printers-->That Printer-->Properties-->Sharing, if memory serves--I don't have a running Windows box any more.)

3. As root on my Linux box run smbclient. The output gave the share name of the computer is seen by Linux.

4. Enter that information in CUPS, selecting "Windows Printer via Samba" as the printer type.

5. Select the printer from the CUPS list or find the appropriate PPD file at LinuxPrinting.

Problem solved!
Did a complete re-install of Ubuntu 10.04.
Changed Ubuntu server from WORKGROUP to the name of the new Windows network I had created
Installed printer through SAMBA all works well.
