Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have a Debian (sarge) box that uses an HP OfficeJet 5500 for printing. I have it set up to use CUPS for printing, and I can print from all apps such as OO or ABI Word. I am having problems getting it to print from EOG and Gimp. I don't really care so much about EOG, but not being able to print from Gimp is a real problem.
Here is what is happening and what I have done so far.
There doesn't seem to be a gimpprint driver for the 5500 that I have been able to find so I have the model set to PostScript Level 2. I have imported the correct .ppd file for the 5500 and given Gimp the path to it in the PPD File box in Gimp's Printer Setup. What happens when I try to print is really strange. Depending on the size of the file I am trying to print the printer spooler icon may or may not appear briefly. The job then shows up in the CUPS web admin interface as completed, and the cups error log shows no obvious errors such as commands not being found or anything like that, but nothing prints.
