problem installing yum on redhat 9

I have installed yum on my red hat 9 distribution from this rpm:

yum-2.0.8-0.1.rh9.rf.noarch.rpm

however when I run yum update on terminal I get this error:

Quote:

[root@localhost ram]# yum upgrade
Insufficient server config - no servers found. Aborting.
what could be the problem?

thanks,
raman

The Redhat planning was to stop support for RH 9
in 2004, I think, but it was prolonged to 2006.

So now Redhat 9 is just old.
The next version was Fedora 1. (free desktop)
Today we have Fedora 9 (newest version)

Late versions have the possibility to upgrade
software.

Regards

thanks for the info.....I was under the impression that red hat 9 is comparatively newer version.....but there must be a procedure to install yum in red hat 9....any ideas on this?

thanks,
raman

I'm not 100% on this, but I think yum fetches the list of packages and downloads those packages from servers listed in the /etc/yum.repos.d/ directory.

Having said that, there are 2 possibilities:

1. The configuration inside those folders are not configured for your distribution (Red Hat 9 in this case)

2. The servers no longer support the distribution. In this case, there's not much you can do about it, actually.

I hope that helps, a little :P

As was stated above, support for RH9 is no more. You may be able to find repos for it somewhere, but you will probably be out of luck. There's a difference between being able to instal yum and yum being able to find useful repos to actually do anything. You assume someone is out there updating packages for an old release, which they may or may not be.

You impression that RH9 is comparatively new is just wrong I'm afraid. Are you sure you are talking about RH9 - where did you get it from?

thanks all for your suggestions......I have decided to move on to fedora 9..rpms for red hat 9 are not easily available for download....so theres no point sticking to it..

That is definitely good news, solves the problem right on the get-go. Fedora 9 is a good system. You may still find a few hiccups here and there (especially with PulseAudio - ugh, I hate it). But generally would be a satisfying experience.

Cheers, mate! ^^
