Problem installing / running aMSN and Gaim

Greetings you all

I'm a complete newbie in Linux (though I know my way all around nearly every Windows existent :P) and installed it 3 days ago. Already got things running, FireFox, WINE, GIMP and the basic apps. I have Linux Mandrake 10.1 (the latest one) in an expert installation, I selected the minimal components so it could install in 1.5 Gb (selected Simple partition management, then made the same manually and added more space for the /home) without any developer tools package.

My problem is the following one: I've noticed there are two popular IM programs apart from Kopete. I like Kopete, the problem is I can't log in Yahoo (for some unknown reason I put my login (as my mail, not just the ID) and the password and doesn't flashes in the status bar as MSN and AIM does). I'm tired already of downloading every file that I see it has the "amsn" name in the start, same with "gaim" with no success. I've tried downloading everything in the aMSN page and in the Gaim downloads. No one, I repeat, -no one- starts.

aMSN installs, with the BIN (latest version 0.94) and at the end of the installation it throws up an error in the part of creating the uninstaller and the installation breaks there. Of course, after all the files have been copied (as it can be seen in the link below)

Image file (copy and remove the spaces, it doesn't let me put a full URL ) - ht tp : / / img . photobucket . com / albums / v294 / DBDARKGuy / console . jpg

I've tried also, with the CVS and the Tarball and nothing happens, I unpack it, then run "./amsn" and it says "Segmentation Fault" as you can see in the previous image. Why it does that, I don't know.

In the case of Gaim, I download every thing available and it always asks for some frickin' (excuse the word) dependencies, I thought it didn't needed any, but it seems that for every little program I want to install it requires them, and they're hard to find. I'm having my biggest problems with TCL / TK trying to install them, also there's a GTK SpellCheck or something like that, that's required by Gaim I think and when I find it, that, or the TCL AND TK, they always ask for other dependencies.

For downloading TCL and TK, I've tried that one RPM finder (the one that shows you a huge list of RPMs with HTMLs at the left, and when I try to download, it says it can't "read" the file, so I can't download it.

Now my questions are the following:

1. Is there a way to remove that "Segmentation Fault" error and make aMSN run correctly?
2. Is possible to download all those files in one, or a site where they can be found?
3. There are, any other messengers like aMSN and Gaim?
4. If not, how can I make Kopete logs into Yahoo correctly?

Thank you all very much for your time and patience . Please, if someone knows anything about this, help me, I've been 3 days (entire ones, from 12 pm to like 4-5 am) without any success, so if you can help me, your help would be greatly appreciated.

i would suggest gaim... and since you are using mandrake... simply connect to the internet... open a console and type "urpmi gaim"

that should download and install it just fine... however, if you have not yet cleared your install sources, they are probably still pointing towards the installation CDs... so do here: www.urpmi-addmedia.org follow the instructions...

may i also recommend, if you did not install it, X-Chat?? IRC is a terrific tool for help or general discussion... just join the FreeNode server and "/join #mandrake" or any other open source app/OS you're interested in.. there are tonsof channels on there...#freebsd #slackware #linuxhelp and much more... good luck..

gaim and kopete gave me the same issues
be sure to run the update program so it downloads the latest game if need be.

yahoo and msn did the same stuff to me.

yahoo - only use your username NOT username@yahoo.com
msn - be sure its username@msn.com or username@hotmail.com

i had troubles at first with this but now its running perfect.

if it disconnects very quickly try and read the error. if it pops something up other than the "user has been disconnected for whatever reason" error.

msn i had to reconnect over and over but once it went it has went everyday now.
same with yahoo once it connected,, its good to go.
