Problem installing Mandrake Linux 9.1

I'm a totally newbie in the Linux field. Untill now I've just been using Win XP.

Here's the deal... I'm trying to install Mandrake on my extra hard disk and am planning to dualboot xp and mandrake. First I used PartitionMagic to create a swap partition of 500 Mb and an ext partition on my blank harddisk - capacity: 3 Gb.
Then I downloaded and burned 3 cdroms (mandrake 9.1 ISO). But I'm not able to boot from cd1.

Then I have tried creating a bootdisk, and it seems to work okay. After booting I get a screen where I can either press Esc to quit or Enter to "Install a new system or update a system running Mandrake Linux". I press enter and then I get this error message...

"That cdrom doesn't seem to be a Mandrake Linux Installation disk. Retry with another drive?"

What am I supposed to do??

Please help me... It's driving me CRAZY!!!!

did you burn directly from the ISO?
i had the same problem with the RedHat 9 ISO's when i extracted the CD1 ISO with WinRAR and added an opera RPM to the directory and then burned the directory.

Thank you for your help... I extracted the .rar file and burned directly like you say.

What is opera RPM?? What am I supposed with it? And what does it do??

Alot of questions - sorry ;)

an RPM is a RedHat Package, they are also available for Mandrake.
It provides an easy way to install software without having to compile code - useful for newbies or non-technical users.

Okay... Where do I find the package for Mandrake?? And what should I do with it? Will I be able to boot from cdrom with this packet??

I'm a newbie - no doubt about it!!! :)

sorry, i've confused u there, an RPM has nothing to do with installation CD's, except that you choose which packages to install during the setup.
what you need to do is use nero or some other tool to burn the ISO files that u downloaded (CD1, 2, and 3), you can then boot from the first CD

Oh, and keep asking those questions - that's what these forums are here for!

I've already used nero to burn the 3 cd's. Boot I can't boot from any of them. I HAVE CHANGED THE BOOT ORDER IN BIOS!!! I don't know if the ISO files are crap...

randomblast 10-04-2003 09:56 AM

hmm, can you use the floppy to boot into the installation?
also, where did you get the ISO's from?

rymark 10-04-2003 09:58 AM

The floppy I made with "rawwritewin" from the cd boots fine. But after choosing to install Mandrake, the installation program says

"That cdrom doesn't seem to be a Mandrake Linux Installation disk. Retry with another drive?".

I downloaded from one of the mirrors at www.mandrakelinux.com...

Maybe I should just try another site??

when you used Nero to burn the cd's did you ....

click on new then down to burn image! ...if you just burn from the wizard it will burn the image just as you downloaded it..it won't burn the iso correctly. I had the same problem until I burned it correctly. The best way to see if your CD is burned correctly is to ...if you are in windows.....put the first cd in the tray and the click on it in windows. If it opens up and you can see several files then you have burned correctly . If you only see the same file you tried to burn than all you have done is transfer the file to the disc. Hope this helps

Hi
This is Michaela from Germany.

Try to open the CD1 from Windows XP.
Goto to DOSUTILs and there you will find a README-File

This explain how to create a working boot disc to be conform with the Installation of CD1.

The Problem with the CD1 is:
You did just a normal COPY, not and IMAGE copy.
This is the reason why the CD1 wont boot directly.
