Problem installing linux... Please help GRUB error 21

Hello,

I am a total newbie to linux and would appreciate someones advice.

Basically last night i formatted my PC and deleted all partitions, i then wanted to install Red Hat Enterprise 5 as my only OS. But have encounted problems.

Basically i get grub error 21....

So i deleted all partitions and tried using Mandriva

Same problem

also same problem with Ubuntu

What would be causing this problem?

I have had to resort to installing Windows XP...... and i really wanna learn Linux

From what i understand Grub error 21 means it basically cannot find the drive.

The specs of my PC are

Core2 1.86
3GB RAM
400GB IDE HDD
ASUS MB
etc

PLEASE HELP!!!!

What kind of hard drive - SATA PATA something else? Are you using a RAID?

IDE HDD, No RAID

its just a single 400GB IDE HDD

How far into the installation process are you getting? And what was the configuration before you deleted all partitions?

Please provide as much detail as possible.

Hunch: Machine is not booting from CD, and old GRUB can't find any partitions

I can complete the installation process

after the reboot it gets stuck on GRUB

b4 hand i was running Vista with one single 400GB partition

Thanks.
