Problem installing Driver for Lynksys Card

I have a problem installing the driver for my lynksys wireless card. When I try installing the file, linux gives me the prompt "root password needed". I don't know what a root password is. I tried the password I set for my username, and the administrative password that comes with teh computer. What else could it be?

was linux pre-installed?
If no, you had to set a root password...have you tried just pressing enter?
Also, are you the administrator for the system...if you are not then there is not much you can do.

If it is an option, you can reinstall linux, to start from scratch, and then read all of the messages during the install. You have to set a root password before you make any user accounts generally.

I've got one of those cards, specifically the 4301 broadcom chip(linksys pci 2.7). If your card is the same, it really isn't hard to set up, but it's a pain to figure out what minor thing is wrong when it's not working/installing right. Show some errors, and someone will be able to help out.

Assuming you're using some sort of drivers Linksys sent you, you might want to try out the forums/software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

Oh, and your root login should be:

login: root
password: mypassword
