problem installing debian 7.2
This problem is not new to me. When I first started using linux I tried installing debian. It was in the year 2009 I guess and am not quite sure about the version. To my surprise it never installed properly. Every time it gave the same failure that installation of grub failed. The whole system otherwise was installed properly except for that grub.
So, is there any solution to the problem???? |
If you are installing from a usb pendrive, Debian pick the pendrive as sda1 where it usually install grub, so you have to unplug the pendrive when it ask if you want to install grub in the master boot record. The same thing can maybe happen with usb cd drive as well, I have not installed any through that so not sure about it.
Could you please describe how exactly are you installing, and in what kind of computer and media, how are you setting the partitions and type or is the installer doing it? There is a way to install the missing grub through chroot, here you can find a howto about how to install just grub, the settings of your system may be different and you will have to adjust/adapt to get it to work. I have never installed debian via usb drive. It is only through the dvd drive that I have tried to install.

To repair the problem, you should boot from a live DVD, reinstall grub in the Master Boot Record and rebuild the GRUB configuration file (/boot/grub/menu.lst on Debian, I believe). |
grub/debian
lemon09,
Deb7 uses grub2, "...menu.list" is "legacy" grub.At the end of the deb istallation it gives you options on where to install grub, it is possible you have put it in the wrong place. On a one system HDD you can install it on the MBR but, I think the best option is to install on /dev/sda, literally. you could use a deb disk(live one) to install grub to the HDD (/dev/sda) but use grub2 commands. The OP needs to look at the grub-install options. OP needs to know size of drive as options include the size of the drive to be installed to. |
