hi, iam new to linux, i have a problem, in my system i am only able login as a root, not as other users, i am able to create differen users after loging in as root in gui mode, but when i try to login in terminal mode by typing the "login " command the terminal window close automatically, and even tried to login as different user in start up also but it is not loggin in. pls can any one suggest me a solution. iam using red hat linux 3.
First if you are using RHEL3, then you are using a very old version as RHEL is now at 5.4.
Also you will need to tell, how you created the users. Have you assigned nologin shell? Have you disabled the users? What procedure have you followed?
And what login command? You do not need any command to login. Once you have got the shell, you can type user name and password and you should get the prompt. On console, you would not be able to see the password characters. Not even the "*". Do it blindly.
