problem in installing rehat on acer laptop
 

hello sir,

i am having acer 5745 laptop

on inserting redhat linux 5 dvd ,it not booting the cd

i have changed in setup also i.e boot from CD-ROM

then also not booting
and there no problem in DVD also

help me

Some things to check.

First, is the CD-rom drive set as the first boot device? Do you see any disk light activity when you try to boot?

Second. Is this device capable or at least reading a DVD? Not all cd-rom's can read a DVD.

Third. How do you know the DVD is O.K. Have you booted it on another system?

Is it RH5 or RHEL5. RH5 is very old and will have no idea how to deal with current hardware.

Sir i have checked dvd on another system ,it is working
and once the cd was boot but as my laptop was having SATA company hardisk ,so
so can SATA company hardisk doesnot support redhat linux 5???????????????????????? this is said by few people ,is it true that sata hardisk not support linux?

If you are running RH5 and not RHEL5, then yes sata is not supported by RH5. RH5 predates sata by serveal years(6-10). Now RHEL5 does support sata. If your hadware was released after RHEL5.0 then you may want to go back and get RHEL5.5 install disks. It will support all but the newest chispets.

RHEL5 is not that old in my opinion but it is old in relation to laptop hardware. Laptops change their disk controllers seemingly several times a year. Most new laptop disk controllers are not going to be supported by RHEL5.
If you are not planning to emulate a server for testing/learning purposes I would install ubuntu 10.4 or fedora 14 or whatever they are at now.
I have RHEL5 running on many machines with SATA drives regardless of what company made them.

This does not explain why you cannot boot the dvd though.

Does the drive appear to spin and boot with no display? or does it just boot to installed OS?

Did you try hitting F12 at post to select boot device?

Just to be clear; RH5=!RHEL5. There is also a huge difference in hardware supported(out of the box) between RHEL5.0 and RHEL5.5. Most of that support is in the kernel that the install disk has on it.


Edit: "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (Tikanga), 2007-03-14." So any hardware released since that time will likely not be supported by a 5.0 install disk. There has been a lot of hardware releaed in the last four years.

Sorry, I just couldn't imagine anyone even finding RH5 media, so I made an assumption.

see in my laptop acer 5745 i am having sata hardisk of 320GB in that 120GB unalloacated space for linux installation and another 200GB for windows XP.....

now i am installing "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (Tikanga)" for learning purpose...
after installing redhat linux5 ,i am going to install ORACLE 10g in that linux...
so installing oracle 10g on rehat linux 5 is MY AIM......

I would grab the RHEL5.5(please stop calling it redhat linux5 as it just causes confusion as to wether you mean RH5 or RHEL5) install disks rather than than the RHEL5.0 disks. It is not the sata disks that might not be supported, it is the chipsets on the motherboard that give the machine access to the sata drives. That is why I would use the RHEL5.5 install disks. It is new enough that 99% of the chipsets out there are covered. You should also be contacting RH about all this, issues like this is what your REQURED subscription pays for.

if you are going to use RHEL on a laptop ( bad idea) it is DESIGNED for the headless server ( in a server room )
But can be used very well in the office .However it was never designed for laptops .Now it WILL run on most and mostly with out too much trouble .

BUT as has been stated RHEL5.0 is 3 years OLD - it DOSE NOT and NEVER will support hardware that is newer than it release date !!!
the current 5 is RHEL 5.5 ( or is 5.6 out)
and 6 now is out
Also RHEL 6.0 is the current . It came out 1 month ago .
IF you must use rhel them BUY A LICENSE for RHEL 6.0 -- it is NOT FREE
and install 6.0
