Angry Problem in installing mplayer for RH9

Hi,
I am trying to install mplayer on my system since last few days. I got following message on running
rpm -ivh mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
error: Failed dependencies:
alsa-lib is needed by mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr
libasound.so.2(ALSA_0.9) is needed by mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr

I then downloaded the above files and when i tried to install, i got the following message

rpm -ivh alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.src.rpm
warning: alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.src.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
warning: user dude does not exist - using root
warning: group dude does not exist - using root
warning: user dude does not exist - using root
warning: group dude does not exist - using root
1:alsa-lib ########################################### [100%]

I then did following

rpm -ivh alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.i386.rpm
warning: alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
file /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0 from install of alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr conflicts with file from package libalsa2-0.9.0-rc3_2cl

however it is still asking for alsa-lib and i am again getting the initial messge, which is as follows

rpm -ivh mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID e42d547b
error: Failed dependencies:
alsa-lib is needed by mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr
libasound.so.2(ALSA_0.9) is needed by mplayer-0.90-4.20030808.fr

is there any solution to this..

thanks in anticipation
rajiv

By far the easiest way to install mplayer on RedHat is to download apt and then do:

apt-get update
apt-get install mplayer

It takes care of all the dependencies for you.

mplayer is already the newest version.
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mplayer: Depends: alsa-lib but it is not installable
Depends: libasound.so.2(ALSA_0.9) but it is not installable
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

please suggest any other method

This isn't really a problem. It just means that your system changed the owners and groups on a few files from this package.

I then did following
rpm -ivh alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr.i386.rpm
file /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0 from install of alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr conflicts with file from package libalsa2-0.9.0-rc3_2cl
Have you tried removing this package ?
rpm -e libalsa2

If nothing on your system depends on it it will remove and you can install alsa-lib instead. If you can't remove it you could try renaming the /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0 file to /usr/lib/libasound.so.2.0.0.bak and retry the package installation.
