Problem in connecting to adsl router and internet

Hi All,
I am a Linux Newbie. Just installed Ubuntu 7.04 and finding problems in connecting to internet. I have ADSL2+ router(450BXI). The connection is live, 2 computers symbol is appearing in task bar with connection information as 100MBps but all ip addresses show 0.0.0.0.

Now if i ping my router (192.168.1.1), it tells that Destination Host Unreachable'. i put live cd of puppy linux and slax but same occured there too when pinging the router.."destination host unreachable".

In ubuntu,if i change the dhcp configuration to static ip, the connection information goes down.even if i plug/unplug the ethernet cable, it does not detect.

Since it is occurring with all the distros i tried, is there any problem with router/ethernet setting?coz,i could connect to router and the internet from Windows. Please help me with your thoughts.

Regards,
Balaji N

What is the output of ifconfig -a when Ubuntu is on DHCP. Do you get the ip from your router?
What are the settings that you do in windows? You could post the network settings of windows so that someone here can give you the equivalent linux settings.
Another thing that you will want to check is if your network card is detected or not. You can find it by lspci.
One more thing that would be helpful, do you dial for internet or your router does that automatically for you when you power on the router?
You do not need to think about it right now as you cant even ping it but it will be helpful for future help if you need some.

if configured under DHCP, ifconfig -a gives
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:9F:8E:BC:5F
UP BROADCASTING RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
     PX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
     TX packets:63 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
     collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
     RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:6066 (5.9 KiB)

eth0:avah Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:C0:9F:8E:BC:5F
          inet addr:169.254.8.116 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCASTING RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          Interrupt:5 Base address:0x4800
lo ....
if i ping 192.168.1.1, it gives Destination host unreachable now when connected in DHCP mode.
On issuing lspci command,
Code:
...
02:02.0 Ethernet controller:Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
...
if i assign a static ip to the machine and reboot, and give ifconfig, eth0 shows my assigned ip (eth0:avah is not listed) but the RX packets shows 0 bytes. Even here, if i ping 192.168.1.1 (router ip), it says destination host unreachable.

What happens if you issue

sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.100

and then try pinging?

It seems your adsl router is not configured as dhcp server. If you look in ifconfig output your system has got no ip address. This was why you were not able to ping the router.
Also go to system > administration > network and check if your eth0 is up or not. If it is not shown as activated, activate it manually. But do not forget to assign the correct ip address and netmask.

If you are dual-booting with windows (and it seems you are), the RTL-8139 can have problems.

See this thread:http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...roblem-591466/

for an explanation. (The solution is at post #12.)

Thanks for all the linux souls! I fixed it.My brother was of great help. I did the following in succession and i dont know what made it work.
1.Deleted iftab file from /etc and reboot the machine
2.sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 up, then did ping 192.168.1.1 and it worked!
3.sudo ifconfig eth0 up
4.sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.5 (192.168.1.5 is the ip i assigned to my machine)
5.Now pinged 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2(my brother's laptop in the same network), ping www.google.com - all worked successfully and i am writing this post from Ubuntu.
Hooray!
Happy New Year!

Balaji N
