smoker,

i am little bit apprehensive for doing changes you suggested, because my windows 7 is not working, currently only fedora is working if i made changes from root (hd0,0) to root (hd2,0) will fedora boots or not, if not then i will left stranded. unable to access any thing, and have to install every thing from beginning?

You are quite correct to be concerned.

I don't know what else to suggest though.

You can use your fedora install disk as a rescue disk if you can't boot at all.

If you add new lines to device.map and comment the old ones (put a # in front of each line to be commented) you can easily change it back.

According to the fedora docs and the grub manual, the entries in device.map are basically guesses. I don't know how seriously grub takes those entries when booting, but according to the geometry output, those settings in device.map are wrong, and so is the grub.conf.

Maybe yancek can answer better ...

Hi smoker/yancek

i got success, thanks you guys you have given me a very valuable idea to understand the things myself. obviously you guys are not here and i know how difficult it is to guide any body from distance. but then person who is being guided applies his/her mind and correct the things has similar value as if guider himself rectify the problem.

Now i am going to tell what i do to rectify the problem so that any body out there if faces similar problem can be benefited by this.

1. i unplug my PATA hdd (as smoker suggested)
2. i plug my 500 gb hdd with windows installed to slot 0 (as smoker says, windows like to be on hd0,0)
3. make it 2nd boot drive.(500 gb with windows, first was DVD RW)
4. plug 160 gb hdd with fedora Linus installed to slot 1
5. repair my windows with installation DVD, now my windows 7 ultimate is up and running
6. but fedora linus crashes, i reinstall fedora linus on my second drive 160 gb sdb1 (sda1 is having windows 7 on it) with grub installed on first sector of linus partition
7. restart system, windows boots (no boot menu comes up)
8. i download and install neosmart's EasyBCD 1.7.2 (more latest are there),create boot menu using it, with windows 7 entry already there i added fedora linus entry with selecting correct partition, save it and reboot, hurray..... boot menu comes up and my both OS start working.
9. I re-plug my PATA disk

yancek geometry command works for me to understand what was going wrong.

you guys rock, how you guys take out time and take such a pain to help others, is really commendable.

best
vinod
