problem downloading DVD ISO image

Hi,

I have Windows XP professional installed on my laptop (AMD64 processor) and I want to install Linux Suse 1.2/1.3. When I try to download the DVD ISO image internet explorer, download accelerator or mozilla finnish after 1.99 BG. The exact file size is more than 3GB.

How can I download the entire (correct) DVD ISO?

Thanks

You could try using a bittorrent client. Most distrib sites have links for bittorrent now, and that would cinch it for you; since bittorrent clients have error checking built in. Also, you might just try Getright or another download client that supports download resuming, to prevent interrupted downloads.
I hope this helps...

Are you downloading to a fat partition? The have 2GB file size limit. Try an ntfs partition instead.

FAT32 has a 4GB limit ;) It's ext2 with older kernels that have the 2GB limit.

xprt64 07-02-2005 01:28 AM

All my partitions are NTFS;
I have tried with DAP (download accelerator plus) which supports resuming. The problem is not that the transfer is stopped. It's simply finnishing, with no errors. It's like the file I'm trying to download has 1.99GB. In fact his real size is more than 3G http://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/suse/p....2-FTP-DVD.iso ;

I can't use torrent clients or ftp because I'm behind a proxy (at my scool).
I can't connect to servers that run on different ports than 443 (HTTPS) and I can do browsing only on port 80.

True. The 2GB limit is IIRC for FAT16.

xprt64 07-02-2005 02:06 PM

ok,I understood, is not from file system limitations....so?

cs-cam 07-03-2005 12:01 AM

Tried a different mirror? Depending on the FTP daemon they're running, I once found a site with a DVD image available but it said I needed to use rsync to get the file cause their software couldn't handle the 4+GB filesize. Meh I shouldn't have downloaded Fedora anyway ;)

Michael Johnson 07-03-2005 12:19 AM

Have you tried to use an ftp client the ftp.sh.cvut.cz tells me that the web server is actually accessing an ftp site.

xprt64 07-03-2005 01:34 AM

I can't use a ftp client because my ISP doesn't allow me. And if I bypass my proxy server restrictions with programs like your-freedom, hopster or anything I have maximum 8KB/s download speed. It would take a life time to download the image.

xprt64 07-03-2005 01:36 AM

I have tried other mirrors, same problem.

xprt64 07-03-2005 01:40 AM

In my case nobody/nothing told me that I should use rsync or anything different from internet explorer. I mean, I get no error while downloading, It just finnishes with no error.

fair_is_fair 07-03-2005 11:28 AM

Get rid of DAP. I had the same problem with it. There are some good download managers out there that work.

http://fileforum.betanews.com/browse...adEnhancements

xprt64 07-03-2005 01:15 PM

be more specific please....what download manager should I use?

BuckRogers01 07-03-2005 01:35 PM

I read something at fedora.redhat.com saying that some download managers cnt handle more than 2gb files

xprt64 07-03-2005 01:59 PM

so far I tried DAP, internet explorer and mozilla to download this file...
now I'm trying HiDownload...
But I think that the problem is within the proxy server.
This is the proxy server identification string (captured with ethereal):
Server: Apache/1.3.33 (Debian GNU/Linux) PHP/4.3.10-15

xprt64 07-03-2005 02:01 PM

I don't think that HiDownload will solve the problem...It reports the size of the file like this: -931424256B....I guess you saw the minus sign :)

xprt64 07-03-2005 02:23 PM

HiDownload does the same think..it stops after 2GB...
:(

xprt64 07-03-2005 02:24 PM

any other suggestions? :)

makuyl 07-03-2005 02:28 PM

Why not ask the IT people at your school? Surely they would know the solution.

fair_is_fair 07-03-2005 03:25 PM

I've downloaded a few dvd images. Opera and Mozilla browsers handled them ok. I tried one for windows that seemed decent. I think it is this one > http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/features.htm.

Once you get linux installed, Kget for downloads and Kb3 for cd burning work very well. It's been awhile since I used Xp.

xprt64 07-04-2005 03:14 AM

The people at my scool don't know anything. It's very good for them that linux servers come with very good default configurations ( that is very likely to fit one needs). Otherwise they would leave the job  .

xprt64 07-04-2005 03:19 AM

FreeDownloadManager (the program that fair_is_fair suggested) doesn't know about proxy servers, so I can't use it.

cs-cam 07-04-2005 04:07 AM

Ask the computer tech at school to download it and burn it for you, I was on reasonably good terms with the guy at my high school since he was the teacher for a couple of my classes and before I got broadband he downloaded a burned a few things for me from the other side of our proxy.

xprt64 07-05-2005 12:48 PM

I went to my ISP and asked him to let me use direct connection in order to download what i needed and he agreed (although he didn't like it ).
I'he downloaded the image, so the problem is within the apache proxy server.

Thanks for helping me :Pengy:

the nearest solution

this is probably a filesystem limitation. This latter is used by your operating system (9x/NT/2000/Me/XP, UNIX/Linux...) to handle files on a hard disk.

I thought we'd already established that wasn't the problem in this month-and-a-half old thread?

Free Download Manager

I agree. Knowing is good. Futher knowlege for the masses. Free Download Manager does have Proxy support (at least mine does). I don't use it, so I don't know if it is broken or inadiquit.

To access the proxy settings, go to Download Options, New Download tab, Advanced, Proxy tab. The default setting is to follow IE's setup, so I don't know what the problem was.

I tried downloading the EVALDVD and had the same problem, but maybe you want to try downloading the 9.3 DVD directly from Novell

Here is the Link to the SUSE Public FTP

Eventually I just downloaded the 5 CD complete 32Bit version. The DVD contains the complete 64Bit version and a modified 32Bit version. The other option would be the 64Bit Network Installion ISO

Anyway, hope this helps. The 5CD version downloaded and installed just fine for me.

xprt64 08-04-2005 05:25 AM

I don't have ftp access to internet. My proxy doesn't allow me.

rfrey74 09-20-2005 04:15 PM

I downloaded the DVD ISO for FC4 to Windows using Internet Download Manager at http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com. It does a great job on large files. Its a 30 day free trial, but it can be uninstalled and reinstalled after 30 days if you don't want to buy it for $30 USD.
