problem booting rh7

I have a server running RH7 that was improperly shutdown yesterday. Now when it comes back up it gives errors on the /usr partition /dev/hda5 and then it asks to go into maintenance mode after a while by entering the root password. When i get into this I run fsck -y /dev/hda5 and it gives me duplicate/bac blocks errors and stops every time around 50000 and just hangs. I have let it sit for 20 minutes or so.

I also tried to boot from the RH7 cd and typing linux rescue but when i get it booted it says it cannot find /etc/fstab so I cannot run it from there.

Any suggestions?

Try any other installation cd you have (rescue mode) and use fsck. It may help.

Ok I finally got it to finish up fsck but when i try tune2fs -j /dev/hda5 to convert it to ext3 it says unknown command. Is there an update to ext2 for rh 7.0?

Is there a way to update the ext2 file system from RH7 so it will allow journaling? Or do I have to update the entire os to RH8 or above.

You don't need to upgrade the whole system, what you need is a working 'tune2fs'. Do you have a newer installation cds? Maybe Mandrake or RedHat? If you do, boot from one of them and use tune2fs.
