problem accessing dds2 cartridge

i am brand new to linux so any help would be much appreciated.
i have been given a dds2 tape which apparently has a tar file on it
and been asked to extract the data. all my stuff is wintel based and
my backup software (backup exec) couldn't read the tape.
i figured that a linux based system might be able to do it and so have
set up a machine with RH8.0 and a Sony SDT9000 tape drive.

the drive seems to work okay as when i type

mt -f /dev/st0 status

it reports back that it is at block 0 etc.

it also retensions the tape, ejects etc and i created a tar file using
another tape and when i typed

tar tf /dev/st0

it returned test.tar which is what i expected.

when i issue that command with the tape i am interested in in the drive
i get an unrecoverable input/output error and can go no further.

i would be grateful for any ideas/suggestions.

You could try dumping raw data using the dd command and see if there really is a tar file on the tape. This probably will not tell you much except that you can extract data from the tape.

dd if=/dev/st0 of=/<some_file_name> bs=512 count=2

thanks, i'll give it a go. the limited info i have suggests that the archive
contains a .lst file of 370k records.
