That's because although you need rx perms on a shell script to 'run' it, what really happens is that the real bash executable eg /bin/bash is reading and executing the shell file, similar to perl programs.
Try putting a compiled binary onto the nfs mount eg one compiled from C.

I used . ./<script> which was successful. But then I used ./<script> and it failed.
Could you please tell me the difference in detail?
