private cloud using linux

is it possible to build a private cloud using linux?
want to hold word docs, pdf's, jpg's etc etc...on a server away
from the office where it can be backed up...i know ftp can do this
but the file will have to be downloaded then uploaded again after
editing..just wondered what was possible/available..any input appreciated...i suppose something like Citrix is better suited to this type of thing...
