Printing over Windows networks
 
I am currently running an desktop with Linux 10.0 which is run through a Windows NT network. I am not able to access any of the printers connected to the network, but am able to locate and access other files on the Windows computers. Do you have any ideas of how I could fix this problem?

No one can help you if you don't give some more information. Linux 10.0 isn't anything, linux means the linux-kernel (core-system) and is around version 2.6 now. I think you mean Mandrake 10.0? Or do you use another distribution?

How do you communicate with the other computers? Do you use Samba?

If you are trying to print to a HP printer connected to your network with a Jet Direct box, you could print directly to the printer ip address, port 9100, ie 192.168.0.100:9100. If you would like to send your print jobs through a Windows print server I believe the path to the printer would be something like this, smb://print_server/printer. If you have to provide an account with permission to use the Windows printer, I think the path to the printer would be smb://username:password@machinename/printername

Sorry for the lack in detail, I am a beginner on the Linux System and have been reading a lot on the net about the OS...Yes, I am using Mandrake 10.0. and Samba Client is what I use to communicate.

Now is there any advice you could give me?

Im not familiar with mandrake, but most distros have a network printer installation wizard that will allow you to "install"/connect to those printers without using smbclient command line.

I have used the Add Printer Wizard. But when I search for printers, there are none. Would you be bale to give me some step-by-step details if it's possible. I did at one point get to a window that allowed me to select what kind of printer I wanted. After selecting the Network Printer, I searched for printers and I got a large list of IP addresses. I don't know which one I am supposed to select though....could I be on the right track if I get back to that?

Ok....I found the Add Printer Wizard, but I still don't know which IP is the right one!

When I type in the path...ie. /usr/bin/smbclient/, nothing happens, it asks me to verify that I want to do this, and then nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong? I'm getting more and more confused!

I am a bit of a newcomer to this - I found (from looking at the programs I could install) that samba was not installed - try going to instal progs and if it is there (do a search on "samba" - install it!

Would it be possible to look that the properties of the printer on one of the Winblows machines? From there you can extract the path and name of the printer. Once you have that, you should be able to fill in the blanks in the add printer wizard that you are working with.

Also, you might want to look into CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) http://www.cups.org

And last but not least, try this: http://www.linuxprinting.org

In fact, try that last link first. There is a ton of information about getting printers to work with Linux on that site. And it explains CUPS.
