printing in linux driving me insane

I have a lexmark z23 printer that just cannot be installed. I have Mandrake 8.0, and I got the drivers for it from the disks. I installed the drivers, and it seemed that it was fine; the printcap file showed my printer with data below. Yet when I entered the lpr command- "lpr -Plexmarkz33 myfile" the following error message occured : "could not print file: server-error-service unavailable." I had also checked in linuxconf, clicked periphials, and printers, and an error message came up saying that it couldn't locate the lpd command in /usr/sbin. Does printing in Mandrake linux require both LPRng and lpd? And what does the lpr error mean? THanks alot.

if service is unavailable... check to see if the lpd daemon is even running or installed.

LPRng and lpd are mutually exclusive, and both suck. For your printing
solutions, I suggest you get CUPS, which should be on your Mandrake
install disk, but if it isn't it's here:
http://www.cups.org

or here (out of date version, but should install on MDK8.0):
ftp://ftp.cs.ucr.edu/pub/mirrors/man.../Mandrake/RPMS
