Printing in Linux
 

I have a duel-booting computer and use Windows XP Pro most of the time. I am booting into Linux for the first few times. My printer is a wireless Lexmark X7675 and shows up as an icon on my desktop. But how to I print?

What distro and what window manager are you using? I used to install my printer from KDE's Control Center (now I think it's "System Settings" or something similar). You need to have a module for your printer in order to be able to use it, however since it appears as an icon it's probably installed. In order to print, be shure that cups (common unix printing system) or any other printing daemon is running. Eg type

"ps -A | grep cupsd".

If it's not running start it by typing

"cupsd"

Last time I did a rebuild of my hardware I had a extra 50GB nice hard drive sitting idle (in addition to the new 150GB one for the build, that is). I asked the Tech to install it as a second HD that boots to Linux (what's the deal with all my buds calling this OS a Lenox?? that's the heater in my mechanical room, Man.) So, Linux seems more stable and solid than my $149.95 MicroSoft(r) Windows XP Professional. I just can't figure how to get my Lexmark x7576 wireless printer to do anything(it shows up on my Gnome desktop as an icon even).

I doubt that you will have much luck with the Lexmark printer, must of which are doorstops in Linux. It seems Lexmark only make printer drivers for hi-end printers, but before you gve up check with http://LinuxPrinting.org and see if maybe that there is a driver available.

Oh, yeah. The printer show up on my desktop as a node on my wireless network. I get an error message that says: "CANNOT CONNECT TO LOCATION 'ftp://192.168.0.4:21/'

Hrrm, it might be the ftp that's throwing it off. Putting the printer model and Linux into google doesn't seem too encouraging, though one poster somewhere said that it might work with the generic postscript driver. (If doing it that way with the cups web interface, choose socket://<ip_address>
