Printing garbage, not sure what to do

Fresh Linux user, Ubuntu install, my printer is an HP Laserjet 4050 on a parallel port. Everything works fine in XP, but in Linux I get the same four staggered lines across the top of every page (IPS-Adobe-3.0 LanguageLevel : 2 DocumentSuppliedResources: (atend) DocumentMe) and it keeps repeating. I have tried many different configurations, uninstalls, re-installs. Have read the 'Ubuntu Pocket Guide' and understand about 1/3 of it.

Looks like you're using Postscript level 2. Just an idea: what "personality" is shown in the printer's config pages? What installed personalities does it have? Could it be maybe stuck on PCL 5/6, or only have PS level 3 emulation?

garbage, hp, laserjet, printing
