For most problems in Linux, the solution can be very simple (i.e. forgetting to connect the printer to the computer or forgetting to power up the printer). Here are some tutorials that I found useful when configuring printing in Linux (Slackware). I was able to configure my laser printer with CUPs as a shared via Samba so that computers on my LAN could print.
