What steps are you going through to setup your printer?

t_0101au 03-29-2002 08:56 PM

I used the printtool utility_

followed all the instructions and it worked in root.
but nothing happens when I run it from /home

Try using kups.

turrican 03-30-2002 07:09 PM

Im sorry, what is Kups? Im new to linux but I am enjoying it and having much sucess, except for the printer. I will try printing in root.:smash:

Sixpax 03-30-2002 08:11 PM

kups is a GUI frontend for configuring a printer with CUPS. Think of it as like a printer setup wizard. It comes with KDE but you can still run it even if you use another DE/WM. You did install KDE and CUPS right?

Aussie 03-30-2002 08:24 PM

Install CUPS and gimp-print, configure your printer by going to http://localhost:631 and select your printer model from the gimp-print drivers, you'll find that the gimp-print epson driver will give you better quality than the windows driver does.

printer problems

Hey, thanks for all of the advice. I cant find kups but I know it should be there because i installed everything for KDE that came with RH 7.2. Aussie, I cant connect to that link that you posted, I dont know why.:smash:

turrican 04-02-2002 09:09 PM

Now I got it to print but its spitting out page after page of text. All I wanted to say was "this is a test" I used Kword and hit print and I get solid pages of text. Looks like some kind of code. Something about prolog copywright trolltech? I hate to have to go back to ms just to print something, please help.
I'll have more dumb questions later

Aussie 04-03-2002 01:59 AM

Start up the kde print manages as root, remove and re-add your printer, and test it again.

turrican 04-03-2002 06:26 PM

Still no luck. When I try to install gimp print I get this message, libncurses.so.4 is needed by gimp-print-4.2-1
libreadline.so.3 is needed by gimp-print-4.2-1
Where can I find these redources and what is the easiest way to get this thing up and running? I checked Red Hats site and they didnt have anything close and RPM find had some things that were close but not exactly the same file name. Why do I have to do this anyway. Please help. I know I must be close because the printer is printing, its just not printing what I want it to and once it starts it wont stop! Should I try a differant printer?

:( :( :( :(

Random text and spits pages, hummmm. sounds like either the printer driver or a bad Parallel port. Does 7.2 have printconf-gui?

turrican 04-03-2002 07:30 PM

Ive been using the printconf utility. I tried installing gimp print but got frustrated with trying to find all of the dependencies of the dependencies. I am realy going nowhere with this. Sorry but Im realy getting frustrated that I cant figure this out.

turrican 04-03-2002 07:41 PM

Ok, Im getting close, I did the print config again from scratch and was able to print the testimage. Now why wont it print a kword document?
