Dell Latitude Laptop-- trying to set up HP Wireless Printer 3056A J611 usings Cups. I am clicking on Add Printer. When first page comes up what do I select. The top two selections I do not know which to select--PDF or the other one. Below thar at Network printers I am selecting APP socket/HP jet direct. Is this the correct selection. Am a newbie so excuse that I am not familiar with this. I set this printer up 3 years ago but have a new router and cannot seem to set up. Any help would be appreciater.

You printer is supported using HPLIP drivers

So, install 'hplip' via your package manager (you didn't tell us which distro you're using). Then you should be able to configure using the HP utilities it comes with eg hp-setup

Thanks for reply. I have installed the driver yesterday. Will follow your sources and get back with you. I am running Precise Puppy 5.7.1

H-P provides full support for their printers in Linux (as indicated by previous posts in this thread) with HPLIP software; HPLIP is installed in most distributions or is freely available at the HPLIP web site. HPLIP is HP Linux Imaging and Printing (it runs your multifunction printer) and you set up your printer(s) with hp-setup rather than having to fiddle with CUPS or XSane (scanning).

All you need to do is execute hp-setup and CUPS and, if the printer has scanning function, XSane are set up for you by walking through a couple of menus, no drivers to install; you do not run it as root, but you do need to know the root password (you'll be prompted for it during set up).

It takes the pain out of printer set up and configuration.

Thank you Tronayne and Ferrari for your help. I am so confused that I just give up. This is so over my head and I just cannot seem to get this. tried the Cups thing and tried to print a test page but it would not print. Said the printer was connected. I do not want to waste your time or try your patience any further than I have. I give up.

The choice to give up is yours alone. However, you appeared to have succeeded when you last tried this back in May 2014. Learning and patience is required. People will help if they get answers to questions they ask of you.

So, some questions (so that we can see which step you're stuck at):

1) Did you install hplip packages successfully? If you're not sure, tell us so we can give you commands that will give us definitive answers.

2) As the printer is connected by wireless LAN, can you ping it by IP address? That's the first step to making sure that it can be found reliably. It is possible to discover and communicate with the printer by other means, but the most robust way means first making sure that it is configured with a static IP address suitable for your network. For example, if it's assigned 192.168.1.20, then I would expect replies using
3) Did you try configuring using 'hp-setup' utility? If you got this far, then there are commands that can help us determine if it is configured properly eg
We need to check the defined printer URI (as it should be using the 'hp' backend).

I think it would be worth your effort to read that old thread of yours I linked to in post #4. BTW, sometimes for network-attached printers it helps to drop the firewall while configuring (in case that is preventing automatic discovery).

I removed printer and re-installed.





removed printer and reinstalled. Voila!! Wireless printer is working, eprimt is working and
set up printer to Precise Puppy using CUPS. Iam now printing again . Thank you to each and everyone who took the time to answer my threads. Also thumbs up for your patience. I just turned 84 and am happy I can learn new things to do and how to do them. Am loving Puppy and installed it in place of Windows xp about 1 1/2 years ago.

Well done! I was glad to be of help even if it was just to prod you along. I know of a number of senior users who are using Linux productively. Getting under the hood occasionally is part of that too.

I do not give up on problems easily but this one had my brain in over load. Your continued support did prod me on and gave me the guts to keep trying. Will be ever grateful to you.

I have a HP Envy wireless printer and sometimes it doesn't respond so I'm writing to tell you the remedy for it when that happens.

Go to the cups website http://localhost:631.
Select Printers, select your printer, then Maintenance, than Cancel all jobs.(just to make sure there are not pending jobs.
Than select Administration and Delete the Printer.

It will prompt you for your root password.

Open the HP Device Manager and re-add the printer. It than prints and works again properly.;)
