Here's an old LQ thread on the error message, /usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed on a Slackware box.

It looks as if CUPS is invoking the hplip utility. I've had excellent luck finding and installing printers using hplip, as opposed to adding them directly in the CUPS interface.

Did you use hplip to install the printer? Also, what distro/version and what make/model computer?

mandibabe83 11-11-2010 06:43 AM

I downloaded the HPLIP download. computer is a Sony 421V I think not really my computer.

mandibabe83 11-11-2010 06:54 AM

the little hplip window comes up saying it is downloading. The first one has like a yellow !.

mandibabe83 11-11-2010 07:16 AM

after it tries to print and nothing happens this shows up Idle- /usr/lib/cups/filter/footmatic-rip failed. If that helps.

frankbell 11-11-2010 09:01 PM

It sounds as if the printer isn't properly installed. When that happens, CUPS can think it's printing when it really is sending stuff into NeverNeverLand.

Did you download the hplip GUI so that you can run hplip from the command line with gui interface to install the printer? If you haven't done that, give that a try: sudo hplip.

On my Debian box the hplip GUI had to be downloaded specifically in addition to hplip itself. Once it I had it, I could run hplip from the command line as root and have the GUI to install my printer.

On my Ubuntu box, I can't remember whether I had to get the GUI separately.

I know the hplip installation can be done with command line, but sometimes the GUI is easier because you don't have to look up all the commands and write some umpty-ump character long command with umpty switches for some command that you will likely not use again for months or years.

The first time I installed a printer to Linux, it was a struggle, not because it was hard, but because I didn't know what I was doing and had no one I could ask to show me. I had to do what you are doing--read the docs and get help over the inner tubes until I finally figured it o--er, discovered that I'd stumbled on how to do it.

mandibabe83 11-12-2010 07:04 AM

I got it to print without the HPLIP installed. Is that good?

frankbell 11-12-2010 09:29 PM

Working stuff is good.

Do you know what did it? I'm curious. If you do, post it here and this thread might help someone else.

(I know that sometimes I get stuff working after trying so many things I'm not really sure which one did the trick.)
