Prepare to help a n00boo

LOL i dont know what a n00boo is but thats me.

I have a 40 gig HD with XP and a little 5 Gig HD with RedHat 9.0.
1) My first problem is that the grub "i think" boot loader recognizes redhat and xp. but xp dont boot. redhat will. how can i fix that?
2) I have 2 different programs that will bring a menu up at boot asking me what OS to boot. but i cant get those fuckers installed.. it says to ....
To run the demo, either execute 'loader.com' from plain DOS
(so no command prompt window, and no memory manager), or
raw write mulan.com to a floppy and boot it.

DOS:
rawrite.exe mulan.com a:

Linux:
dd if=mulan.com of=/dev/fd0

but when i do it wont work. from redhats umm... i forgot the name of it.. its like the command prompt. but anyways... this is a really stupid fuckin question but i cant get into dos to to even mess with it. i insert my bootup floppy and it lets me "dir" but only cd drives.. c:\ says its busy.. WTF? is there something im doing wrong? what files do i NEED to make a good bootable floppy?

3) How can i connect to the internet through RH 9.0? i have aol dialup right now cause im broke for a little bit.

4) how do i play mp3 files? knoppix plays them and i dont think i can play them on RH.

5) How do i explore my other hard drive for wallpaper and music to put on RH? knoppix let me look at everything i wanted to but RH wont let me see shit.

6) how do i run .exe files? wine? i have wine but have no clue how to install it.

i think theres more.. i really hope someone will help me out here. ill be back within a few days for answers.. thanks alot guys.

o yeah...

come over to our new site.. www hardwarewiz c0m its cool as hell.

Sounds to me like a problem with your boot loader try to reinstall it. I understand your frustration! For mp3 you could use XMMS with redhat to play them. AOL there is a program supposed to be out there forget the name to use aol but you could use earthlink with no software and they always have sign up deals. The structure of linux does not see your drives as "drives" it sees it as separate partitions and they have there own mount points. As far as wine all I can say is google for some how to and learn, I don't use it! I would for sure get rid of aol!

"is there anyway i can edit the win xp boot file to have a redhat option? heres my boot.ini"
Yes. Search these forums.

ranger12002 10-31-2003 03:40 PM

to install wine if its a .rpm su to root and type rpm -i file

if tar.gz do tar zxvf file and then read the README file for further instructions

what type of partition is your windows partition? fat32? NTFS?

connecting to aol for dialup try pengaol

to play music try xmms if its not installed its on your cds

and use lilo or grub not the windows bootloader

my wine came in a tar i think but my stupid ass extracted it with winrar and deleted the file.. can i make a new .rar file out of it?

my xp is of course ntfs

how do i edit the boot.ini file in xp? just paste and copy me the line. thanks

what about my 3d card drivers?

how do i install ut2003?

AND>>> i tried to install xmss and it froze.. so i rebooted my pc and redhat wont load.. it blinks on and off by local user login before it loads kde.

The 100+ veiws is probably the rest of us noobs looking for anwsers.

sounds like you need to get the right driver for 9700.
to explore your C: drive you would first have to mount it and tell it it is msdos cant remeber the excate command . You can look in man page for mount. You might try reloading RH.

RedHat9 and NTFS

RedHat won't let you see shit because it does NOT support NTFS out of the box or from the ISO:s you've downloaded.
What you can do is to go here and download a little patch that will allow you to READ your files on the XP drive.

As of now there is NO or at best sketchy WRITE support in linux for NTFS partitions. That's supposed to change with the 2.6 kernel...

Oh, and GOOGLE might help. GOOGLE is your friend! :)
(..at least that's what I've been told time and again...)

First the AND.
I does load KDE? I had a similar problem before, but it never got so far as actually getting to desktop. In my case it was due to that the root partition was filled up, and the font server needed some free space there to start properly. How much space do you have left?

mp3:
You also need to get the mp3 plugin for XMMS. Red Hat doesn't come with it :(
You can find the plugin and the reason for Red Hat not including it here.

ut2k3:
The linux install stuff is on the third CD. The linux installer is a bit confused about the numbering of the CD:s though. The file is either a .bin or a .sh, can't remember which at the moment. Tip: Fix your card driver first ;)

Your card drivers:
Did you get them from ATI or did you just use those on the CD? If you got them from the CD, go over to ATI and get the latest linux drivers. Make sure you read the install instructions before installing. You will probably at least need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config to actually load the new drivers. I don't actually have ATI myself, so I can't help you any further.

As for ntfs, while there are good instructions mounting ntfs as well as the module necessary on the link suplied by BlakeJr, you might find this helpful;
the line in /etc/fstab that allows me to easily mount the windows partition:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/washu ntfs noauto,owner,users,ro,umask=0222,iocharset=utf8 0 0

it mounts it to /mnt/washu.
mount it to whatever directory you want, but a dir in /mnt/ is recommended :)
Just make sure the dir exists :)

ranger12002 11-01-2003 12:07 PM

i dont think you can use the windows boot loader to load linux so you might have to use lilo or grub and they are better anyway ;)

iLLuSionZ 11-01-2003 02:43 PM

ok, im just going to stick with the floppy i made to boot up RH.

as for
"BlakeJr, you might find this helpful;
the line in /etc/fstab that allows me to easily mount the windows partition:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/washu ntfs noauto,owner,users,ro,umask=0222,iocharset=utf8 0 0"

where do i type all this?
and do i type it exactly like that?

once i get my hard drives mounted i can start messing with stuff and read the stuff i got. i have quite a bit of stuff but i dont want to burn it all on cds.

megaspaz 11-01-2003 02:59 PM
