preparations for new linux distro
 

hey whats up guys, i wanted to know some stuff about changing distros. i have ubuntu and win xp dual boot set up with grub and everything boots perfectly. my problem is i have an asus motherboard with onboard video and im stuck in 640 x 480 and i cant change it for some reason (i got into my settings and found where to change it but there is only 1 resolution setting). i have kubuntu loading and i figure my board just isnt supported or something... my driver cd does have a linux folder in it but i cant do anything with it. if anyone knows how i can get my video set to a decent resolution can you please let me know!

but my main question is this: if i cant fix my problem with the video i would like to install fedora or open suse instead of ubuntu... and i want to know can i just go about installing it over the partition containing ubuntu without doing anything special? i ask because im worried about configuring grub boot loader since it works fine right now. it gives me 3 options for booting ubuntu (normal safe and memory test) and 1 more option for winxp. any suggestions or advice is welcome. thank you!

I would say try suse10.3 - has excellent hardware detection.

Do you have / in a seperate partition and /home in a seperate one.

Then, you can tell the installer of suse to format / and install the new suse_root_OS files there and _keep_ the existing home as the new /home.

Remember _not_ to format /home (better to backup home files before doing a new install)

Suse will reinstall GRUB - but no worries - it will detect XP and give you a similar "3 options".

Go ahead - and post your results.

ok thanks - i figured it would be straight-forward but i just wanted to check. i have nothing to backup on my linux partition so i will just install suse. i'll let you guys know what happened once i get around to it. as for partitions i have one ntfs for winxp - one swap file for linux and one ext journaling for linux, thats all so i guess me home and / are on the same partition!
