ppp0 device startup

Hey Hey!!
I have a adsl USB modem and am using the Eci Adsl drivers to connect to the net!!
I can connect and it works fine ..but i have the occasional problem!

for example i also have a XP box which i sometimes need to have the modem plugged into and when i unplug the modem and plug it into the linux box it boots up and then it doesnt load it
something like ... "Error enabling pp0 device - device not ready" even though it is plugged in
and so i have to shut down and unplug the modem for a few minutes...then plug it bak in and this seems to work !!! but this is all very time consuming and after all linux was meant/built to be on all the time wasnt it?
So i was thinking isnt there a way to manually activate the modem after bootup if it hasnt been picked up??
cos its really doing my nut in now lol
(this problem also happens when i disconnect by doing ifconfig ppp0 down to kill the connection! i have to restart afterwards!!!)
so i would really like a quick way to bring the modem bak up

Any ideas??

Thanks alot
Kane

I use Eci Adsl too, I start it with "startmodem" and kill it by "killall pppd".

If I then wanted to connect again, I would "pppd call adsl updetach".

try doing the same, it is working fine with me.

hmm

well that might work after i have done the startmodem/ kill

but err...my main problem is when it doesnt pick the modem up at bootup!!
and so i really need a way to "refresh" the ppp0 device so it picks it up and so i can connect to teh net without constantly rebooting!!

thanks
