Yes, this error occurs each time I dial, I cannot connect .... ever!
I have put a force address = My_IP_Number into the /etc/ppp/wvdial.conf program (I have a static IP) as suggested in man page. This results in my connection not being terminated and not actually establishing communication either.
I am really confused ... any help greatly appreciated.
if you're using dialup, then the ip shouldn't be static. dsl or isdn would be a different issue... but try commenting out the force_ip line and see if that will work.
I have a permanent Modem connection to the internet over a 56k pstn line (not dsl or isdn). I have a static IP address, it is not dynamically allocated. PPP has been working OK for months on RedHat 6.1 .... now when I upgrade to 7.1 it doesn't work. You infer that I should be using another product, .... what would you suggest?
i'm not a big fan of distro upgrades precisely because of problems like this. i'm guessing that a clean install of 7.1 probably would have gone without a hitch. the upgrades don't do well when a file has been changed, like you probably had done to the wvdial.conf on 6.1 -
could you post your wvdial.conf file? also, do you happen to know what versions of pppd and kernel you're running?
I originally upgraded but found there were too many problems. Too many things were confused, so I re-formatted and repartitioned the hard drive and did a fresh 7.1 install. My kernel is 2.4.2-2, my wvdial is 1.41 and my pppd is 2.4.0. My wvdial.conf is as follows;
[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyS0
Baud = 57600
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS
Set Volume = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Init4 = ATM1L3
well... i can't see anything wrong with it. you'll probably want to put the "force address" line backing... my only guess would be to update the pppd - www.samba.org/ppp - maybe there's been a bugfix. i'll keep looking, tho.
