Potential Linux user has questions on CAD program compatability

This is my first post to this site.

I am considering switching to linux from windows XP. I am hesitant though, because my school (University of Louisville) uses Solidedge Version 16 by UGS for drafting purposes. I want to be able to continue using this program at home. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas concerning the success of SolidEdge with WINE or any other emulator programs for linux?

I've seen that there are 3D drafting programs available for linux, as well as Auto-CAD being successful with WINE.

Solidedge's requirements are (according to their site):

"This release of Solid Edge has been certified to run on the following:

Windows 2000 Professional operating system running Service Pack 3 or 4

Windows XP Professional operating system running Service Pack 1

Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

Beginning with Version 16, Solid Edge will not install on machines without Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher.

Internet Explorer is not required to be the default browser.

Only 32-bit operating systems are supported.

Insight operations are only supported on Windows 2000 or Windows XP clients.

It is not recommended that you run Solid Edge on server operating systems.

Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 are unsupported operating systems. Solid Edge will not install on these operating system"

i didnt try it b4 and i am not an engineer :)

but if you want autocad then version R14 and 2000 are suppose to work

I am an Engineer :D and I use Pro-Engineer a lot at office. As of I know I dont know if any of the windows based CAD software work or not. Autocad failed for me. So am not sure.

You can try running it through WINE. But I doubt if it'll help. WINE generally mimics Win95 or Win98, both of which is not supported by Solid Edge.

Looks like Solidedge may not work in Linux, but hey, there seem to be lots of other drafting programs availiable.

If anyone does know of solidedge working in Linux let me know, otherwise, I may just have to go with a dual boot system.
