check your maillog and messages log. Probably you have misconfigured main.cf. Also do you have any other mail servers running? ps -e | grep sendmail

postfix status ;master is stopped

thanks for ur reply.
The sendmail is stopped.
the message that gives when i run /var/log/messages is:
setroubleshoot: SELinux is preventing master (postfix_master_t) "read write" to ./master.pid (var_run_t). For complete SELinux messages. run sealert -l b57ae94f-5748-4b03-a6d3-9203388a33e0
the message that i receive when i run /var/log/maillog is;

postfix/postfix-script[2169]: fatal: the Postfix mail system is already running

my main.cf that i have configured are like this;
myorigin = $mydomain
inet_interfaces = $myhostname, localhost
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain, localhost, $mydomain
mynetworks_style = subnet
mynetworks_style = host
mynetworks = 192.168.10.0/24 ,127.0.0.0/8
home_mailbox = Maildir/
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix

myorigin = $mydomain

You have set $mydomain right? and the other variables?

part of my main.cf is like so:

mydomain = tomyn.com
myorigin = $mydomain

so my origin would be set as tomyn.com.

If you copy/paste sealert -l b57ae94f-5748-4b03-a6d3-9203388a33e0 into console as in your selinux error you get more information on why the selinux policy is preventing access and possible solution.

Lastly, in your main.cf, what do you have set for 'mail_owner'?

ps, which distro?
