Post install trouble!

After trying to install Red Hat 9 on one of my older systems *many* times due to all kinds of problems, I finally got it to complete the installation about 10 minutes ago! The problem was I could not make a boot disk for some reason. I tried a few different floppys, and I know the floppy drive works.

Anyway, I rebooted the system after that, and when it came back on, all that was there was a white cursor blinking in the right corner.

Is there any way to get this thing to boot??

Please help!

From what I read I understand this is a
Linux-Only machine? Why not install
a bootloader in the MBR (You could
do that even with dual-boot)?

As far as I know RH does have a recovery-
option on their bootable Installation-CD's.
All you need to do is boot of CD, edit
the configuration file of (grub in your case?)
the boot-loader, and run it.

Good luck!

It should already have installed LILO or GRUB, shouldn't it have? And yes, this machine just has Linux on it. Ok, i'll try the linux rescue mode....with that does it run the install over again?

"The second stage of the install you selected does not match the boot disk your using. This should not happen, so I'm rebooting you now."

I guess that makes sense, since i'm using the "Install" bootdisk. The problem must be with GRUB or LILO not being present at all. Would there be any way just to install that? Or any bootdisk I can download that will just let me select the linux kernal to load?

There are ways, however, they may strongly
depend on your distro.

In slack what I'd do is the following steps:

1. boot of Slack install CD
2. use the parameters
bare.i root=/dev/hda<my root-partitions number> noinitrd ro
for the kernel that I boot
3. I log in as root and do
mount -o remount,rw /
I edit lilo.conf
I run lilo
e voila :}

Maybe there's RH users out there
that can get you going?

Cheers,
Tink
