Post Install Problems (Mouse & Monitor)
 

Hi all,

I just installed Debian on my PC and encountered several problems. When searching on Google I found this forum and decided to try it out. Please forgive me if the first questions are dumb or could be answered simply by reading some FAQ somewhere since I'm having quite an information overload atm and try to learn where to find everything (so tips are welcome) :)

Anyway, I'm having the following problems which I hope somebody can help me with (either solution or advice where to find an answer myself):

Problem 1
KDE (which I installed) doesn't see my mouse. I see no pointer nor does something move when I move my mouse. I've looked at my XF86Config file (below) and found several threads in this forum and on the internet about different protocols needed etc.. I'll try them all out until it works but in case somebody has a Logitech Cordless MouseMan Wheel and can share his config with me I'd appreciate it!Problem 2
When starting KDE I get the topleft part of the screen (only trashbin and 2 icons). Obviously part of the screen is out of my monitor 'bounds' (Monitor: Belinea 10 30 40) but I don't know how to fix this. I think I either have to change the config (XF86) or to change some settings in KDE, which is hard since I have no mouse and can't see all of my screen yet :(
When I made the original XF86Config file (by running some program which asked questions) my monitor wasn't on the list so I had to enter the horizontal and vertical refresh rates manually. I think they're correct (got the from the manual) but could this be the problem??

When changing the protocol to "PS/2" in XF86Config and restarting X (and thus KDE) my mouse worked. It still had a quarter of the screen (topleft) and after (part of) the KDE logo there was an error about the soundcard (not important atm I think)... problem is there wasn't anything after that, just a gray blank screen... sigh..
When I pressed Ctrl-Alt-1 I returned to the text-console and saw some log there which gave a warning/error about some font not being able to load (Spoon??)

Every time I reload X it's the same now... didn't have *that* error before though (had konqueror running in my quarter screen before I had the mouse working)..

Any ideas?

You are the first one I've seen who has [nearly] the same problem I do!!!
My Logitech Cordless [USB] trackball worked for a little while - but not since day of install, almost 2 weeks ago.
I seriously hope you get some more fix-it replies - the one I got was similiar to yours - with the proviso I not use it if I never used a console before [I just INSTALLED Linux, so, DUH!!!]
I installed Mandrake 7.0, but am also going into a KDE/X-windows desktop [whatever the hell that means...] Anyway, I am able to [clumsily] navigate around, my desktops appear to be more stable than yours.
I have the Trackball on a PS/2 connection [after two hours trying everything I own - WIndows isn't recognizing any serial devices tonight for some reason!].
How is your Logitech device connected? Is it a cordless thing?
{No joy on Logitech site, but I did print off @dozen or more pages of stuff that's helped me stabilise my Trackman Marble FX in Win98SE}.
I hope to look over your shoulder at further replies to your post, if you don't mind...:confused:
