Question Possible locations of X $PATH defaults

Hello,
Yes, this IS my first post, so please be gentle to me...

I am running RHEL4 with Gnome. As I was redoing my setup environment I noticed a lot of paths in my $PATH variable that should not be there. Further trace revealed that they were there already before any .cshrc was executed, which is where I (want to) define my $PATH. This always happens when I start a new terminal window with a rightclick->open terminal in Gnome. But (as far as I can see) not when I start a new terminal "textually" without involving X.

OK, so X environment has its own PATH, is that a problem?
For me it is, because somehow application-specific paths that point to old and no longer existing version of software are in there. That should not be. So I need to edit them away.

And now, the question: Which are the possible locations/files where such a setting could take place?
I have not been able to find it.

Any tips most welcome!

Best regards, Lars

Thanks for these tips, Stureedy.
Unfortunately none of them helped. BTW, I'm running csh.
