Posix?

I have a question... I always see on linux sites that linux aims towards full posix compatability. What exactally is posix??

THat's funny... I went looking on IEEE's site today for a friend that wanted the POSIX standards that cover pthreads, so I can tell you that the IEEE side of the POSIX standards seem to involve 27 seperate works varying from 200-900 pages. I'm looking into the ISO goop tomorrow.
