port enable

How to enable port 6679 in debian??

Enable it for what? Do you want to set up a service to listen to port 6679 for something? Is a service already listening on that port and you need to open up the firewall?

You 'enable' a port by starting a service that LISTENS on that port. What are you trying to do/accomplish? What service are you talking about? Version of Debian? Environment? ANY details?

Edit your /etc/protocols file.

@rmistler: why??
Protocols aren't ports (& he doesn't need to edit /etc/services either). See above comments.

I thought you had to edit either protocols or services if you wanted to allow those protocol port values to pass through your network interface. And since 6679 would be nothing IANA standard, I figured you'd have to add it also because of that. Then again, if you open real time streaming, the session uses port numbers in the 20,000's and they pick unique unused ones, so ... I guess I was thinking wrong about that.
