pop3? can't telnet from other computer except localhost
Hi,
I am trying to setup a mail server using sendmail and imap. i have both installed using rpm -ivh. i can telnet both port 25 and 110 from localhost. However, i can't telnet from remote computer through port 110.
when i check netstat -an, i see 0.0.0.0:110. so i assume that its accepting incoming through port 110. so im all confused now.
Distribution: Linux Redhat 9.0, Fedora Core 2,Debian 3.0, Win 2K, Win95, Win98, WinXp Pro

I would not recommend stopping iptables for good. That is your firewall. I can speak from experience, if you leave it down; they will come. Do a man iptables and follow the guide in there to add it. Basically what you have to do is to open ports 25 and 110. The rules can get pretty confusing so pay close attention. I shut down all other ports except those two. I also turned off answering ICMP requests. That prevents a ping from finding it. I only work on my servers from the local console so I don't have to telnet or SSH in. Anyway, good job on getting it going. Now have some fun!
