pointers to audio/video players
 

where do i get rpm packages to play audio files (I tried playing one and a message popped saying it's a .rpm file). Where do I get wave, mp3 video players from?

You tried playing a media file and a message popped up saying it's an rpm file??? How exactly did you try playing it?

MY guess perhaps is that you were tring to open a Realplayer rpm filr, you can try real player for linux available at their site.

I tried playing a file and a message popped up saying it's a .ram file and didn't know which application to play with. I download xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm and when I installed using rpm -i xmms-1.2.10-1.i386.rpm, it gave me file conflict errors like
file /usr/bin/wmxmms from install of xmms-1.2.10-1 conflicts with file from package xmms-1.2.7-21.p
file /usr/bin/xmms from install of xmms-1.2.10-1 conflicts with file from package xmms-1.2.7-21.p
file /usr/lib/libxmms.so.1 from install of xmms-1.2.10-1 conflicts with file from package xmms-1.2.7-21.p
file /usr/lib/xmms/Effect/libecho.so from install of xmms-1.2.10-1 conflicts with file from package xmms-1.2.7-21.p
.....
......
Then when I tried again to play an audio file I got a message saying an audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin required to play the file

You're trying to play RAM files, I see. Thought you were trying to play rpm files. That would be silly.

You're getting those conflict errors because you already have xmms installed.

The files you're trying to play (the ram ones) are Real Audio (yuck!) files. You need to download the Real Audio player. Go to http://www.real.com and click on the link at the bottom for the UNIX/Linux player.

There is no official support from the "Real" corporation (or whatever the hell they're called) for the Linux version of the RealPlayer. I have it. I use it. It sucks. Lots of obscure error messages. Crappy quality. Doesn't let you record streams. Consider yourself warned.

I did download and installed the player and when I tried playing it asked for an audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin.....I though it should have come with the player.
Another question is how do I get to know where my player was installed. I tried looking for it but couldn't locate the installation directory.

When you tried playing what? Is this a file on your hard drive? Are you clicking on a link in you web browser? What exactly are you doing?

If you installed it you should know where you installed it to, no? How exactly did you install it? If you can't remember, it's probably it's probably in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin along with the rest of the programs.

Try to be more informative with your questions. Take me step by step through what you're doing and what exactly happens
