Source instructions are in the README. However, depending on distribution, you may find it better to use and modify the source package.

This leads to an important first question: why? Is this for a production system, home system, or a test system for learning?

Compiling a kernel is not a simple task, and can affect the toolchain, or if done incorrectly, booting to a custom kernel can cause instabilities or even a kernel panic (assuming you know how to successfully update the boot loader).

Perhaps compiling your kernel is not the right solution. What problem are you trying to solve?

Spell out your words, please. And the README file(s) are in the kernel source directory. Also, putting in "how to compile linux kernel" into Google, will tell you lots as well.

But I agree with sinuhe: WHY are you doing this? This is not a simple, nor risk-free procedure, and unless you're trying to solve a very particular problem with NO other options, I'd strongly suggest not doing it.
