i have been trying for the past few days now trying to install mplayer with no success. i have read several threads, went googling, and nothing seems to help. i tried apt-get mplayer, that didnt work. i tried getting all the rpms (mplayer.rpm, mplayer-gui.rpm, mplayer-skins.rpm. lame-libs-3.9xxx, installing all at once and that worked , although not completely) installation went good, im able to lauch mplayer, the problem is when i try to play an mpeg, avi, file
i get the following message
Error opening/initializing the selected video_out(-Vo) device

i think this is has something to do with my video card drivers. so i went to ati.com and downloaed the drivers for my video card(ati radeon 9200) and after configuring it , i got an error message. something along the lines, x-server not working properly. i dont want to give up , anyone that has had this problem and/or knows the answer , please advise

it doesnt necessarily have to do with your vid card's driver. mplayer can use different drivers or something like that. type 'mplayer -vo help' to see a list of different video drivers. Also READ THE DOCUMENTATION i know that theres something in there about it.
