Barnacle WiFi tether - needs phone rooting - my tether of choice
USB EasyTether - free version doesn't support https, only http.
There is also PDAnet, i've never used it though, so can't comment

I tether my android device without any apps. I plug it into my Ubuntu machine via USB then select mobile broadband from the phone and computer network settings and off I go.

What version do you have, savona? Gingerbread?
My cheap (under 100) LG GT5400 only upgrades to 2.1. Came with 1.4 originally, hence the price.

I know it works with 2.1 as well since my wife has a droid eris running 2.1.

Looks like other people have had the same success:

Cool heads up,thanks, I'll check it out. Although this phone is soo cheap and basic, ill be amazed if it does have this option.
Gave up looking for more solutions once i had barnacle Wifi working. I think i'll stick to wifi option though - less wires and coolness factor - looks good on train home, phone in the pocket, laptop online

Well that great if your happy with it. I like the USB option because there is no software needed and it charges the phone as well.
