Hello, I'm a newbie, I need to install my linksys LNE100TX ethernet card. I'm following the istruction from a document that tell me to do the following:

First I compile the tulip.c (I used the verison that came with the disk, I think the latest) and I got a tulip.o file

2ndly, I copy this tulip.o into the /lib/modules/2.2.14-5/net/ directory.

However I got stuck in the third part when I was suppose to type 'depmod -a' in the console. I get an error message like this:
**** unresolve symbols in /lib/modules/2.2.14-5/net/tulip.o

and when I try 'rmmod tulip.o'
I get a message that sya 'Delaying Initialization' or something.

What's wrong?? I'm using RedHat 6.2.

Please help, I'm trying to get away from Window, but I can't till I'm able to surf the web with Linux!

Thanks
Douglas

Easiest method to me.....

The method I think would be easiest would be:

1. install network card
2. using the computer you posted the message with, download Mandrake 8, or go buy Red Hat 7.1 or SuSE 7.1
3. install one of those Distro's that auto-detect your card..

I have a lne100tx also, and all those distro's auto-detected my card upon installation.......

Kernel rebuild time or load a module!

It sounds to me like you need to learn about recompiling you kernel. The way that I would go about this would be to recompile the kernel with the Tulip driver built in. Have a look at the following:

http://linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/Kernel-HOWTO.html

It will seem scary at first, but just leave the things that are set the way they are. Find your way to the network devices section "Network device support" when doing a 'make menuconfig' then go to "Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)" then under "EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers" you will see mention of "DECchip Tulip (dc21x4x) PCI support" and "Old DECchip Tulip (dc21x4x) PCI support". Try enabling the first one, rebuild the kernel and see what happends. If this fails then try the 'old' option.

The HOWTO explains it all far far far better than I could. Clearly once you looked though it the more specific questions will be answerable by the people on the forum.

My response to ther -a pea (see message above):

I download both RH 7.1 and Mandrake 8, and copy them to the CD as instructed. However when I boot from my cd-rom during installation it freeze after detecting my Hard Drive (I have 2 hd and Linux is on the second one). Why this happens?? I mean the older version of Mandrake 7 and RH 6.2 installation was just fine.

Help if you can.

My response to jharris...
I'm looking in the in the HOWTO web site...will get back to you soon.
