Here is what you need to do if you have a .tar.gz file or .tgz file (from the command line):
1- change the current working directory to tmp. "cd /tmp"
2- unpack (untar) the files. "tar -xzvf FILENAME"
a new directory will be created. Usually just called whatever was the filename before the .tar.gz
3- cd to that directory "cd FILENAME"
4- configure the program "./configure"
5- compile the program "make"
6- install the program (as root) "make install"
The program will then be installed in /usr/local/bin. You can run it directly "/usr/local/bin/PROGRAM" or edit your path to include /usr/local/bin "export PATH=/usr/local/bin:$PATH" then run the program.
If this sounds a little much for you, try just looking for an rpm package that someone else built. RPM find (www.rpmfind.net
) is a good place to start.
