please help me solve my internet problem

I have some problems I can't solve and since I use Debian it would be a lot easier if I could just do something like apt-get and let it do the work for me.
However I cannot connect to the internet. Let me explain my situation so far.

I have to connect to a vpn server. This can be done using vpnc. I managed to connect, at least have it say that there is a vpnc connection running in the background.
I can ping my gateway (157.193.X.X).
My eth1 is up and has a local ip adress (17x.x.x.x).
When I do vpnc-disconnect it says there is no connection.
When I try to connect again it says that port 500 is already in use.

Any suggestion (or maybe you need to say the routing table)? So far linux has been useless to me and connecting to the internet would solve 90% of my problems.

Not even someone who can point me in any direction? Eg what tests I can possibly do to know more about the situation? Or maybe some info I haven't found?

Thank you for your answer comprookie. The vpnc is already installed though, and almost running. There's just one tiny detail that must be missing. Probably a routing problem.

Hi,
most likely you'll need to ask on a vpn specific site or mailing list.
I don't know much about it but this site has some info and lists on it.

hope this helps

OH! almost forgot
what is your default route?
check with the "route" command
it may be important for VPN, not sure though

Hi!
my default route is something like 172.xxx (if I remember it correctly). I'm checking your site now. Thanks for the answer.
