Please, help!!! I broke a box and can't get apache2 to work again

Hi,

sorry if this is a newby question, but all research didn't help. I did a lot of things to a proxmox installation and now apache2 no longer launches. I am not sure what broke it of the things I did. So proxmox has this webgui and the webserver doesn't launch, when I try to launch it manually, I get the following error:

root@master:/usr/lib# /etc/init.d/apache2 start
Starting web server: apache2apache2: Syntax error on line 203 of /etc/apache2/apache2.conf: Syntax error on line 1 of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/ssl.load: Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/mod_ssl.so into server: /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.8: symbol pqueue_size, version OPENSSL_0.9.8 not defined in file libcrypto.so.0.9.8 with link time reference
Action 'start' failed.
The Apache error log may have more information.
The error log of apache doesn't say much though, just that it's a segfault(11). I cannot reinstall this box from scratch easily, and it's located remotely. From all I found it seems some libcrypto is not linked correctly where it should with softlinks, but I don't know where or how. ssh still works btw.

Please, help?

P.S.: Edited: sorry for the title, I'm a little headless here.

Hello danast, welcome to LQ,

I think I cannot help here. But could you please describe how this happened? I mean how it happened that the machine broke?

The two errors you describe, namely the "error in line ??? of any conf file" and a segfault in the logfile may have different reasons.

Could you please in more detail what happened?

Markus

You have answer in question itself ,Apache fails to start because mod_ssl is missing .Check whether you had mod_ssl installed .

If you want apache to start without ssl

Comment Line 1 : /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/ssl.load
Comment Line 203 : /etc/apache2/apache2.conf

Try out whether you could able to start apache without mod_ssl .
