Please help, Fedora 2.6xx after mannually using fsck scan, disk is read only
 

Hello,

We have an old Fedora linux box, it has bad blocks, and it prompt to use fsck manually fix those bad blocks. after reboot, the file system turned into read only, can not create temp file.

How can I fix it?

Replace the harddisk. A disk with bad sectors will get more bad sectors, so a fsck run will not fix that situation.

It can also depend on how you fixed it.

Running fsck while the disk (assuming the root filesystem) is read only is fine.

HOWEVER- DO NOT SHUT THE SYSTEM DOWN. Halt it instead and then reboot.

But get ready to replace the disk. And I would suggest getting a newer distribution. If you don't want to be updating it every month (and upgrading every 6 months), use a production quality distribution like RH/CentOS or SL.

and be aware that fedora has never used the kernel version in the name

a OLD version that is using the 2.6 kernel is years out of date
pre fedora 15

have a look at the /etc/redhat-release text file
it will be between fedora 1 and 15

also fedora is a very bad choice on a server
fedora releases a NEW version every 6 months


i would use CentOS 6.5
or buy a support contract for RHEL 6.5
cent is the free rebuild of redhat

redhat has a 10 YEAR support life time
CentOS has a 7 year siupport lifetime
Fedora has a 13 month!!! lifetime

The system is really old with an application on it. Now if I use the system restore CD to restore the system, Can I preserve the application and use it?

I also want to create a hard disk mirror and then use fsck to fix it, is it doable?

No, unless the application is also on the restore disk.

It depends. When the filesystem is damaged to much this won't work. But even if it works there can be no guarantee that OS, applications or data on the new disk are consistent.
