Unhappy Please help Cant get printer to work!


I just purchased a brothers mfc-490cw multi function printer the cd only came with drivers for windows and mac I do beleive I waas able to download the drivers I need from the linus drivers site ( I also downloaded cups) I dont know whaqt to do next or how to get the drivers running I am lost I contacted brothers the person who attended me said they would help me if they were familiar with the system but since they where not they couldnt help me but that the printer is compatable? help!!!I am lost!

Unhappy need more help

I already downloaded the lpr and cupswraaper drivers from that site! What do I do now that is where I am lost I dont understand the instruction too well ! sorry I am new!

To tell you how to install the drivers, we need to know what are your distribution & version.

It says version 2.22.3
Distributor: Ubuntu is this what u r asking for? it also says this
This version (Hardy Heron) was released in April 2008 so its version number is 8.04. hope this helps

As you have Ubuntu, you need the drivers in the deb format.

Just follow the install instructions on the aforementioned page, knowing that you should use the dkpg command.

Do that for both lpr and cups driver.

Hi,

From the site you need to download the deb drivers, not rpm
First make a directory download
Code:
mkdir download
Than download the files to the folder download
then issue the following command
Code:
cd download
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

where do I put this mkdir do I open a terminal and I read the instructions I just dont get it?

open a terminal and type
Code:
mkdir download
Then download the files to the folder download
Go back to the terminal and type
Code:
cd download
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
to install the 2 files.

In printer configuration it is asking to sellect a connection

Print into pdf file
App socket/HP Jet Direct
Internet printing protocol (IPP)
LPD?LPR Host or Printer
Windows Printer VIA SAMBA
OTHER

Is there a specific one I should choose?

ok

ok I opened a terminal and typed in mkdir download and I got this
mkdir: cannot create directory download': file exist did I do something wrong?
