Unhappy Please help, browser getting "connection reset" error on Linux server

I fervently hope someone here can help me with the problem I am experiencing. I am a programmer, and I have very little understanding of linux sysadmin terminology/concepts. I am attempting to troubleshoot a problem with my website. It is a Facebook app, and whenever I try to connect using Chrome, I get an error stating that the "connection was reset". I have been Googling for four days straight trying to find a solution to this problem, but no joy. A big part of the problem is that I do not understand the terminology being employed, and the output from many of the tools referenced is likewise indecipherable to me.

Here's what I've either done or tried so far:
  • Install SSL
  • Create firewall with iptables
  • Set up Apache for SSL
  • Install/set up BIND

I am running a VPS with CentOS 5, apache, PHP, and MySQL.

I could spam this post with a ton of information from my iptables, apache, etc but if anyone needs information from my server, please let me know how to get it, and I will post it here.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

Exclamation i think we need more info

your access.log says 200 for every query, so apache is answering ok.

do you have access to any page on your webserver?
what is the name/ip of your webserver? can i test to access it?
can you post your virtualhost definition?
what are the iptables commands you have set up?

may be, we can try this out in a step by step if you doesn't have hurry

As Habitual poit out:

you say: domain name: railsmp.us; IP 184.82.239.164
but i see:

Code:
charly@capibara:~$ nslookup railsmp.us
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address:	192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:	railsmp.us
Address: 184.82.239.165

charly@capibara:~$ nslookup www.railsmp.us
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address:	192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name:	www.railsmp.us
Address: 184.82.239.165

so when i test access to railsmp.us i'm accesing on a different ip

on the iptables code, as i can see you have send me a iptables-save
i see an error:
-A INPUT -p tpc -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

see -p tpc should be -p tcp

looking at open ports i <really> do not understand:
Code:
nmap 184.82.239.164

Starting Nmap 4.62 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-09-18 16:36 ART
Interesting ports on 184-82-239-164.static.hostnoc.net (184.82.239.164):
Not shown: 1706 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp open smtp
53/tcp open domain
110/tcp open pop3
143/tcp open imap
993/tcp open imaps
995/tcp open pop3s
3306/tcp open mysql

Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 253.731 seconds
that doesn't match your iptables firewall:
Code:
:INPUT DROP [7:384]
:FORWARD DROP [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [307:29468]
-A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tpc -m tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
-A INPUT -p tcp -m tcp --dport 443 -j ACCEPT
this says it should be only few open ports and the policy should be DROP
¿are you testing without firewall right now or we are looking at another host?

is there any NAT in between or something?
is this mailserver running on the very same linux instance as your webserver?

Oh, btw, I corrected that error in iptables, and now I am receiving a different error in Chrome:

Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

nmap now says
Code:
80/tcp closed http
443/tcp closed https

one more:

ps ax|grep apache

and try w3m http://localhost/

(w3m is a web browser, just like chrome, but in the command line; pls install it if you don't have it already)

w3m says "can't load http://localhost/."

Here's the ps output:
Code:
14063 pts/0 S+ 0:00 grep apache
Thank you.

apache is not running, that's why we cannot connet to apache...

i use Debian, not CentOS/RHEL, so may be you execute this in another way:
/etc/init.d/apache2 stop
(if it's not running it should output some error about it)

then:
/etc/init.d/apache2 start

if no errors:

ps ax|grep apache

if you get something like
2870 ? Ss 3:16 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start

then

w3m http://localhost/

if it works, test with chrome

if apache is not starting, check /var/log/syslog and /var/log/apache2/error... (may vary on Debian vs. RHEL)

to see it on runtime, on one console run: tail -f /var/log/syslog and in the other run /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

i will be online for the next 7 hours (i'm on work right now)
best regards
